Our Adventures in Homeschooling – November

Although I’ve always known we’d be on the path to homeschooling, this year we really got down to business and made a commitment to this way of life. Our kids Luca (age 7), Rose (age 5) and Remi (age 2) explore life and learn every day through reading, imagination, play, and time spent together and with our community. We are documenting our experience here. Enjoy!

NOVEMBER :

Looking back on this month in my mind’s eye, it felt like a long stretch of mostly unproductive time. But once I started going through all of my pictures from the month I realized how far from the truth that was. And even if it was “unproductive” in the sense that we didn’t spend much time doing structured schooling work, it was never void of natural learning, never lacking in excitement and fulfilling moments and it certainly was a month full of living together with our children – exactly how I envisioned this life to be! There have been many mornings when the kids were all playing so contentedly that it would have been wrong to pry them from their worlds, engrossing every ounce of their energy, creatively in their imaginative play. I loved listening to snippets of Luca’s chatter while deep in his play with tiny dinosaurs and Lego guys as I passed his room. And Rosie has the most beautiful sweet sing-songy voice as she plays with her babies or colors another princess. And even Remi is getting lost in his own play, and I won’t touch that moment of peace with a ten foot pole! All of this is what it’s all about and why we have chosen this life with our kids. And it is worth it – every moment!

Here the kids are watching the sun come up over the harbor in early November. I made some hot chocolate, snuggled them into the car and we did it! It wasn’t that hard and it was worth the effort – we even had an older gentlemen mention how lovely it was that we were out there together and he asked to take the kids picture. Worth it.

Journaling and other book work :

I love how these journals are always a place to go to, always a wonderful crazy documentation of each child’s development along the way. We’ve been working in them for about two years now and it is really lovely to look back through the pages and see the spirit and soul of your child there on the pages! From random squiggles, to detailed monster drawings, to hand-drawn multiplication tables, each page growing and maturing, exploring and shifting. Luca has started numbering every page he starts and Rose picks a random page to start on every time – at first this drove me crazy, but then it felt like maybe that was just exactly how her journal should be. They are like a little slice of my kids life – personal and completely unique. I can’t wait for Remi to start his!

Alphabet Poster :

Rose and Luca worked on a giant alphabet poster for our wall. They mapped out all the letters, picked corresponding magical and non-magical creatures for each letter and painted out the whole thing. We are still missing the Whale on “W”, but it is a great addition to our space!

Bird Feeder :

Our building project for the month was a bird feeder! Luca and Rose did a lot of the sawing and drilling and the finished product is being enjoyed by all as we watch the birds (and a few squirrels) from our dining table.
